While driving, our driver pointed out a cashew tree. I've never seen a cashew tree before and I was extremely fascinated by the shiny red fruit that grew on top of it. Of course, when he told us it was edible, I made him stop the car. I had to try it for myself!
The fruit itself is very fragile. The thin waxy skin is easily broken and once inside, the pulp is very juicy much like a peach but is only slightly sweet. It has a very strong almost-peppery smell as well. I've never had anything like it.
The driver quickly warned us about eating the raw cashew but before we did anything we were going to regret. Apparently, the nut that grows out of the bottom of the fruit is poisonous like cyanide until roasted. So thankful for that man.
